Positioning statement: 20mph speed limits

The RAC is supportive of 20mph zones in densely populated residential areas, especially near to schools as well as accident black-spots.

The RAC has concerns about the imposition of 20mph zones on through-routes, where compliance tends to be worse and the possible increases in journey times are unnecessary and where 30mph limits are perfectly reasonable.

The 2015 RAC Report on Motoring found that 61% of motorists say 20mph limits are appropriate where they are currently in place, although 44% admitted to breaking the 20mph limits.
