More plug-in cars sold in February than in whole of 2014, SMMT figures show

Reacting to SMMT new car sales figures released today, RAC data insight spokesman Rod Dennis said:

“Although traditionally a quieter month for car sales before the introduction of a new number plate, the figures for last month were stark and show just how much of an effect the pandemic is having on the new car industry.

“With sales of diesel cars continuing to decline and even petrol sales now dipping, it continues to be the plug-in market that bucks the trend – more electrified cars have been sold in the first two months of 2021 than were bought in the whole of 2014, and sales of plug-in and battery electric cars continue to account for a larger proportion of overall sales than diesels. This is mirrored by the breakdowns our patrols are attending, with the proportion of EV call-outs increasing as their popularity grows.

“It remains to be seen if demand for new cars from companies and private individuals can return to the sorts of levels we saw in 2019 as the pandemic restrictions are hopefully lifted in the coming months.”

The RAC is supporting drivers make the switch to electric vehicles thanks to its EV Boost and All-Wheels-Up technologies. To track the UK's progress in going electric, visit the 'road to electric' page on RAC Drive.
