Expanded ULEZ in force in London tomorrow - RAC comment

Commenting on the introduction tomorrow (Monday) of an expanded Ultra Low Emission Zone in London, RAC head of roads policy Nicholas Lyes said:

“Drivers in London need to be prepared for a much larger ultra-low emission zone from Monday. Strict emissions standards mean that, as a general rule of thumb, anyone with a diesel car registered prior to September 2015 needs to check to see if their vehicle is liable for the daily charge. However there may even be some slightly newer diesels that could be impacted. Most petrol cars registered prior to January 2006 will similarly have to pay. Drivers should use the TfL vehicle checker to see if they are affected, or speak to their manufacturer if they are unsure.

While there are different ways to pay the charge, drivers should be aware that failure to do so could result in a much costlier penalty charge notice. Blue Badge holders also need to pay the charge unless their vehicle meets the ULEZ emission standards or is registered with the DVLA with a 'disabled' or 'disabled passenger vehicle' tax class.

We understand there is a need to clean up London’s air quality, but the ULEZ’s expansion couldn’t come at a worse time for drivers that depend on their vehicles, with fuel prices approaching record highs and continued concern about using public transport during the pandemic. In addition, the nature of targeting older vehicles means those drivers from lower income backgrounds are likely to be disproportionately impacted.”

Amber warnings issued for Storm Goretti - RAC comment
Following Amber warnings for snow and strong wind issued by the Met Office this week, RAC breakdown spokesperson Alice Simpson said: “These relatively rare amber weather warnings for snow must be heeded by drivers. They're clear signs that disruption is likely across a large swathe of Wales and central England, and possible over a much greater area of the UK. People may want to consider avoiding driving overnight from Thursday into Friday or bringing journeys forward to avoid being stuck in the worst weather.
