Nearly two in every 100 vehicles now untaxed - RAC reaction

Following the publication of new government figures on the number of unlicensed (untaxed) vehicles on the UK's roads, RAC head of roads policy Nicholas Lyes said:

“It’s hugely concerning that we’re seeing ever greater numbers of unlicensed vehicles on the roads with the total number now standing at nearly three-quarters of a million. While we’d like to think the abolition of the paper tax disc back in 2014 isn’t responsible, the fact remains evasion has increased significantly since then to the point where a shocking two in every 100 vehicles on the road aren’t taxed. The cost from VED evasion in 2021 alone is set to be a whopping £119m, a substantial sum that should be spent on improving our road network.

“We urge the DVLA to step up enforcement and to do all it can to bring evasion down, as it is clearly not fair on those who do pay their fair share to drive on the road.”

Third of motorists not aware of paper tax disc being scrapped

More than a third (36%) of motorists are not aware of the imminent move to do away with the need to display the paper tax disc in the windscreen of a vehicle despite the changes taking effect in less than two weeks’ time on 1st October.

Vehicle tax evasion statistics - RAC comment

Responding to new data on the proportion of untaxed vehicles on the UK's roads, RAC spokesman Simon Williams said:
“While it is good news that vehicle tax evasion has gone down, it is still significantly higher than it was before the tax disc was abolished in October 2014. To put this into perspective, evasion in 2013 was around 0.6% and in 2015, the next point at which this survey was carried
