RAC warns motorists to prepare for an icy blast on the roads

Forecasters are predicting snow, blizzards and icy conditions for north England and Scotland

RAC spokesman Pete Williams said: "With extreme conditions forecast over the next 24-48 hours for the north of England and Scotland - motorists look set to experience an icy blast with high winds and blizzard conditions compounding the sub zero temperatures which could make driving treacherous.

"Drivers are advised to pay extra attention to their local weather forecast before heading out and be prepared to change their travel plans if road conditions take a turn for the worse. Monday morning may well prove challenging for people hoping for a trouble free commute. The RAC has increased patrol hours by 20% in anticipation of extra demand and we are expecting higher volumes of call-outs for battery related and electrical problems and the potential for some motorists to become stranded if snow begins to drift.

"As a rule of thumb drivers are advised to expect the worst and prepare for extreme weather and we hope that winter's latest blast won't catch you out."

"A little time spent giving your car some vital TLC ahead of a journey will be time well invested and could help save you hours and avoid a breakdown. Check your oil and coolant levels and that your tyres have a good depth of tread and are at the right pressures and then check your wiper blades are in good condition and that you have plenty of quality screen wash which can cope with temperatures down to -20 degrees or below."

"Before heading off on your journey allow your car time to warm up while you clear your windscreen and any snow on top of the roof. And take extra care when driving taking account of the road conditions, leaving plenty of space between your car and the vehilce in front and avoid sharp braking and acceleration."
