Sales of new electric cars jump 50% in just one month - RAC reaction

Commenting on new data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) that shows another rise in sales of new electric cars, RAC director of electric vehicles Sarah Winward-Kotecha said:

“June was another month that demonstrated the seemingly inexorable rise in the popularity of new electric cars. Sales of new battery electric car jumped by more than 50% in just a month and made June the fourth best month on record for sales of these vehicles.

“The RAC estimates that half of all plug-in vehicles on the UK’s roads are now pure electric models, and it appears to be the case that the rising share of new electric cars is happening at the expense of those powered by petrol or diesel engines.

“We’re playing our part in encouraging more drivers to opt for an electric car next time they change their vehicle, and just last week launched our new EV leasing service offering some extremely competitive rates on popular models.”

Breakdowns 20% up during heatwave
RAC breakdown spokesperson Simon Williams said: "Tuesday was a very busy day for breakdowns with our patrols finishing the day 20% busier than normal for late June and Wednesday is looking even more challenging as more cars are succumbing to the extreme heat. We strongly urge people to avoid driving unless it's essential, as breaking down in these conditions is potentially life threatening if they aren't properly prepared. Being stuck at the side of a hot road without enough water and some form of shade is very serious. For this reason our patrols are also carrying extra bottles of water to give to broken-down members.
