Press release -

RAC launches market-leading European Breakdown Cover

The RAC has today launched one of the most comprehensive European Breakdown Cover products available in the UK, aimed at supporting the millions of UK motorists who drive their vehicles to the continent every year.

The new ‘Comprehensive’ level of cover has a 5 Star Rating from Defaqto* – higher than any other major provider. It covers vehicles of any age as well as drivers towing caravans or trailers, whether they need a single trip or an annual policy.

As the majority of people struggle to explain a breakdown in French, Spanish or German there are also 24/7 English-speaking case handlers to manage repairs or alternative travel arrangements – whatever it takes to get the journey back on track.

Comprehensive cover includes garage labour costs up to £150, as well as protection for emergency repairs following a vehicle break-in and expenses up to £1,500 for journey continuation as standard.

The flexible product allows for additional levels of cover for up to 48 countries, 17 people and journeys for up to 180 days.

Unlike many competitor products there is no overall claims limit, no restriction on emergency roadside repair or towing costs to the nearest garage in Europe and up to £100,000 of legal care cover1.

There are also two other new cover levels available, which are ‘Standard Cover’ and ‘Short Trip’. Short Trip cover is available for up to five days – ideal for quick hops across the channel.

Alex Health, RAC head of membership, said: “Going on a driving trip in Europe can be one of the best experiences to have but if you do happen to breakdown it can turn into a nightmare, especially as the average cost of repatriating a vehicle in 2013 was more than £940.

“We wanted to create a product that everyone could depend on, whatever the reason or time frame they were travelling within. With no overall claims limit, contribution to garage labour charges included, and covering more countries than any other major provider it’s no surprise our comprehensive cover is one of the highest quality offerings in the market.

“It’s our aim to come to the rescue of every customer who is unfortunate enough to breakdown in Europe and get them back on the road as quickly as possible, which is why we are committed to providing the highest standards of customer service.

“We already had an excellent customer service record in 2013, with 91% customer satisfaction, and with the new product this will go even higher still.”

About the RAC

First formed in 1897, the RAC has been looking after the needs of its members and championing the interests of drivers for more than 120 years.

Today it has more than eight million members and is one of the UK’s most progressive motoring organisations, providing services for both private and business motorists. Whether it's roadside assistance, insurance, buying a used car, vehicle inspections and checks, legal services or up-to-the-minute traffic and travel information – the RAC offers a solution for all motoring needs. The RAC is committed to making motoring easier, safer, more affordable and more enjoyable for drivers and road users.

The RAC is the motorist’s champion and campaigns to support the interests of its members and UK drivers at a national level. This includes voicing concerns about the increasing cost of motoring, particularly the price of fuel and the high level of tax levied on it, advancing levels of road safety, and supporting the needs of all drivers, from young to old.

The RAC’s annual Report on Motoring – first published in 1989 – is one of a kind and provides a clear insight into the concerns and issues facing today’s motorists.

For the very latest news on UK fuel prices, check RAC Fuel Watch. It provides a comprehensive guide to the latest UK unleaded petrol and diesel prices – both at the wholesale level and at the pump - and tracks these prices daily to help drivers check if the price they pay to fill up is a fair one.
