RAC comments on "disturbing" rise in social media insurance scams

Commenting on reports of drivers being caught out by so-called 'ghost broking', where fake car insurance is sold through social media channels, RAC Insurance managing director Mark Godfrey said:

“This is a very disturbing crime which takes advantage of young male drivers who are naturally keen to take out cheaper car insurance as they are paying the highest premiums in the market due to the higher risk.

“It is particularly worrying when you consider that many of the individuals taken in by ‘ghost brokers’ are those who can least afford the devastating financial and personal consequences of being involved in an accident without valid insurance.

“Unfortunately social media makes it far easier for scammers to identify and target young male drivers.

“We urge every young driver to be extremely wary of approaches from so-called insurers via social media. Whenever considering insurance cover drivers are best advised to choose a reputable motor insurer and to ensure they check all of their paperwork. If a deal sounds too good to be true then it probably is.”
