RAC comments on Highways England's updated £15bn road improvement programme

Highways England’s has today updated its £15bn road improvement programme to reduce the impact of roadworks on motorists and minimise congestion while improvements take place. 

RAC roads policy spokesman Nick Lyes said: “While it is concerning that a number of projects which were due to be delivered through the Government’s Road Investment Strategy for the strategic road network have been delayed, it is encouraging that Highways England is trying to minimise disruption by avoiding too many roadworks in nearby areas.

“This reprioritisation of schemes announcement will inevitably be extremely frustrating for some motorists who will now have to wait even longer for promised upgrades to certain key sections of the strategic road network, but equally others will be happy to see schemes that affect them being brought forward.

“With congestion levels getting worse as a result of record numbers of vehicles using our roads it is vitally important that the schemes have been prioritised in such a way as to make the biggest difference to improving overall road capacity.”

Fuel prices rise by a penny in 24 hours
RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: “Average pump prices have jumped by yet another penny in just a day. Petrol has now broken through the £1.70-a-litre barrier and stands at 170.54p – its highest since 23 August 2022 – and diesel has risen to 192.86p – its highest since 29 July 2022. Unfortunately for hard-pressed drivers, prices look set to keep on rising due to the cost of a barrel of oil consistently trading over the $100 mark.

Fuel prices hit new Iran war high
RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: "Fuel prices hit new Iran War highs on Monday with petrol climbing 169.68p and diesel hitting 191.68p, surpassing Sunday's petrol high of 169.52p and the diesel high of 191.54p set on 15 April. This takes the cost of filling up a 55-litre family car with unleaded to over £93 and diesel to more than £105.
