RAC comments on new vehicle emissions rules expected to be introduced in London

Commenting on plans expected to be announced by the Mayor of London to tackle emissions, RAC roads policy spokesman Nick Lyes said:

“Many businesses will have been preparing for the introduction of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in 2020 – with the zone now kicking in a year earlier firms are likely to face additional costs earlier than they were expecting.

“But every motorist who use the capital’s roads needs to be ready for some pretty big changes that are coming up as London acts to cut harmful emissions – which will either hit drivers in the pocket or force them to rethink their choice of vehicle.

“The expanded area which the ULEZ will cover is also significant. A huge swathe of residential zones will be included within it, with diesel motorists in particular going to have to think carefully about their driving habits or be hit by new taxes.

“Drivers in other UK cities will also be waiting nervously to find out what plans the Government and local authorities have for them when it comes to vehicle emissions-based charging. Owners of older diesel vehicles looking to switch to a cleaner alternative will be hugely disappointed that the new Vehicle Excise Duty tax structure will no longer reward them for buying a new, more environmentally-friendly car.”
