UPDATED: RAC issues advice on driving in high winds as Storm Abigail moves in

With several weather warnings issued by the Met Office, and the arrival on 12 November of Storm Abigail, the RAC's provides advice to motorists on driving safely in high winds.

RAC spokesman Simon Williams said: "Strong, sudden gusts of wind can be very dangerous for motorists driving in exposed areas, so we are urging motorists not to be caught out by Storm Abigail.

"The 'invisible' force of the wind can lead to vehicles unexpectedly being knocked off course, sometimes with devastating consequences.

"Drivers should particularly be ready to compensate for the effects of wind hitting their vehicles when passing lorries.

"Plan your journey before setting out and give yourself more time to get to your destination, and when driving maintain a greater distance between yourself and the vehicle in front as this will give you more time to respond should other vehicles get into difficulties.

"And be mindful of how you load your own vehicle - a roofbox can make you more prone to catching cross-winds as you drive, so only leave one attached to your vehicle if you’re using it."
