RAC issues urgent warning to drivers as Storm Arwen arrives

Following the Met Office introducing red and amber warnings as a result of Storm Arwen, RAC Breakdown spokesperson Rod Dennis said:

“Drivers are suddenly being thrust into some of the worst weather conditions they’re likely to face on the roads which could be a massive shock to the system. There is now a very high chance of Storm Arwen causing major disruption in parts of south east Scotland and north east England, so we strongly urge motorists in these areas to stay safe by parking away from trees and avoiding driving if at all possible. Red warnings from the Met Office are relatively rare and are the strongest possible signal to drivers not to set out in the first place unless absolutely necessary.

“Drivers in those parts of the UK covered by amber weather warnings should also consider postponing their planned trips until the storm passes. As well as making driving much more challenging, strong winds cause an increased risk of trees and powerlines falling. Add snow into the equation and the risks increase significantly.”

General advice on driving in windy conditions is available on the RAC Drive website.

Amber warnings issued for Storm Goretti - RAC comment
Following Amber warnings for snow and strong wind issued by the Met Office this week, RAC breakdown spokesperson Alice Simpson said: “These relatively rare amber weather warnings for snow must be heeded by drivers. They're clear signs that disruption is likely across a large swathe of Wales and central England, and possible over a much greater area of the UK. People may want to consider avoiding driving overnight from Thursday into Friday or bringing journeys forward to avoid being stuck in the worst weather.
