With the arrival of hot weather, and the prospect of heatwave conditions in some parts of the UK, RAC mobile mechanic of the year Jack Halstead said:

“With temperatures ramping up over the next few days, especially in the south and east of England, we’re expecting to see an early summer surge in breakdowns as more drivers find their vehicles failing them. Demand from drivers for our help will climb by around 10% compared to what’s normal for mid-June, with overheating engines and tyre blowouts - caused by air expanding in the heat - topping the list of problems.

“No-one wants to break down at best of times, but in the heat it can quickly become dangerous - especially for young, elderly or vulnerable people. Keeping cool and hydrated while waiting for help is vital, so pack plenty of water as well as lightweight clothing that can effectively block the sun, where it makes an appearance.

"But the increasing risk of breakdowns underlines why it’s so important drivers don’t run the gauntlet by skipping essential maintenance. If there’s a warning light on the dashboard, or if a vehicle hasn’t been serviced recently, getting a qualified mobile mechanic or reputable garage to take a look without delay is really important."
