Following a further increase in the cost of a barrel of oil amid renewed tensions in the Middle East, including in Yemen, RAC senior policy officer Rod Dennis said:

"With oil leaping another $6 overnight to nearly $108, wholesale fuel prices – especially for diesel – continue their upward march. Average UK prices now stand at 168.46p for petrol and 190.08p for diesel, and we expect diesel prices to hit a new US/Iran war high within days. Both fuels have increased by 7p since just the start of the month, adding £3.85 to the cost of filling a typical family-sized car, heaping more pressure on household budgets.

“The data shows it still pays to shop around. Supermarkets are currently 4p cheaper on average, at around 164p for petrol and 186p for diesel, while some independent forecourts are charging less than 158p for a litre of petrol. Free apps such as myRAC allow drivers to find the cheapest fuel, wherever they are."

Price of diesel reaches record high
RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: "The average price of a litre of diesel has now reached the highest level in UK history at 199.18p, in what will be a financial blow to households and businesses that use their vehicles regularly. The cost of filling up an average family car is now almost £110, £31 more than it was at the start of the US/Iran conflict. By eclipsing the previous highest price of 199.09p seen in June 2022, the diesel price has entered new uncharted territory. This spells pain not only at the pumps for drivers, but for everyone who buys goods or services that rely on diesel lorries and vans; undoubtedly these increased costs will be passed on to consumers.

Record diesel price looms
RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: "The price of diesel continues to move steadily towards a new all-time high. A litre now averages 197.31p across the country, meaning it's just under 2p (1.78p) from surpassing the 199.09p record set on 25 June 2022, although we’re aware of many forecourts already charging in excess of this.
