Plymouth vehicle technician becomes 300th RAC Mobile Mechanic

Milestone reached for the UK’s largest highskilled mobile car servicing and repair fleet

James Castella‑Bullen from Plymouth has become the RAC’s 300th mobile servicing and repair technician.

An experienced vehicle technician, James joins the fast-growing, highly skilled RAC Mobile Mechanics division which operates alongside the well-known RAC breakdown business to service and repair customers’ vehicles at their homes or workplaces, saving the hassle of going to a garage.

James, who is 23, joined the RAC in early 2026 and is already busy carrying out servicing and repair jobs across the South West after an initial two weeks of training at the company’s West Midlands headquarters at Walsall, which was followed by a week shadowing another RAC Mobile Mechanic.

Before joining the RAC, James spent seven years as a mechanic – three as an apprentice and four at an independent garage. With his previous role increasingly requiring heavy manual labour and unfulfilling regular MOT work, he began to consider his career options. Having considered starting his own mechanic business but been put off by the instability and lack of support, he then came across a job advert to join the RAC Mobile Mechanics team.

James said: “I’m very pleased to have become the RAC’s 300th Mobile Mechanic. Working at customers’ homes to service, repair or diagnose what’s wrong with their car is really satisfying. At a garage you rarely got to meet customers, but now that’s an everyday part of my job. Working as an RAC Mobile Mechanic and managing my own time has been amazing – it’s exactly the change I needed and beats anything I ever experienced in a workshop.

“This job has all the benefits of working for yourself, without any of the drawbacks. The support network is great. While I have a lot of technical experience, the training covered everything I needed and shadowing another RAC Mobile Mechanic showed me exactly how things work, giving me confidence from the very start. Moving from a small garage to a company with thousands of employees was initially daunting, but I’ve never once felt like just a number at the RAC. You really feel like the RAC is behind you every step of the way.”

RAC service maintenance and repair lead technician Hugh Paull said: “James has joined the RAC Mobile Mechanics team with great enthusiasm and a strong willingness to contribute, quickly becoming a valued member of the operation. From the outset, he’s demonstrated a positive attitude, a solid work ethic, and a clear commitment to maintaining the high standards we work to as the RAC.”

Since its launch in June 2023, the RAC’s Mobile Mechanics service has rapidly grown into the UK’s largest high‑skilled mobile repair fleet operating nationwide. Capable of carrying out over 4,000 different types of complex repairs that don’t require a workshop ramp, RAC Mobile Mechanics complete work at customers’ homes or workplaces, offering a highly convenient alternative to traditional garages. The service also provides an industry‑leading 48‑hour average lead time from booking to completion – over 11 days faster than the standard industry wait of 13.3 days.

RAC research shows that more than half of drivers (52%) would consider using a mobile mechanic to get their car serviced on their driveway, removing the need to go to a garage.*

The service has quickly earned a strong reputation for quality and customer satisfaction. RAC Mobile Mechanics hold a 4.8 “Excellent” rating on Trustpilot, with 90% of reviews awarding five stars. Supported by continuous investment in people and capability, the service continues to expand rapidly while maintaining the high standards expected of the RAC brand.
