RAC comment on call to lower drink drive limit to cut accidents

Should the drink drive limit be reduced to 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood in England and Wales?

The LGA and fire authorities are calling for a a lower drink-drive limit to cut alcohol-related accidents.

RAC road safety spokesman Pete Williams said: “There is a growing body of evidence to support a reduction in the drink-drive limit both in terms of lives saved and financial savings from reduced hospital costs. This is backed up by our own research that shows that the majority of motorists (57%) support a lower drink-drive limit.

“We would like the Department for Transport to review all the evidence and particularly learnings from Scotland to understand the best course of action.

“It is also vital that we maintain a focus on the dangers of drinking and driving. In light of the marked increase in serious accidents we urge the Government, the police and other organisations responsible for road safety to continue to highlight the dangers with high profile education campaigns.”
