RAC has busiest day for breakdowns in seven years as cold snap continues

Commenting on the ongoing cold snap and risk of ice, RAC director of roadside operations James Knight said:

“This week is shaping up to be one of the busiest ever for us with yesterday (Monday) seeing more breakdowns in 24 hours than we have seen in seven years. Our patrols are exceptionally busy again today as the cold weather continues to take its toll on vehicles across the country, and we are logging about seven breakdowns every minute.

“While it is two days now since the last significant snowfall, winter hasn’t loosened its grip on drivers. Conditions on untreated roads especially remain treacherous and ice will continue to be a major challenge for drivers throughout today and into tonight. As rain pushes in from the west later it will meet the cold air, making roads very slippery and meaning there is a risk of more snow, especially over higher ground. The threat of ice for tomorrow morning also remains very real indeed.

“Even though the majority of main roads are open and running well, motorists still need to be prepared should they find themselves broken down in these very cold conditions. Be sure to pack sufficient warm clothing, food and water for all your passengers so you can stay comfortable while you are waiting for help.”
